IE7

June 30th, 2009 by ComputerTraining.com Forum user Instructor

Microsoft has released an important security bulletin for users of Internet Explorer 7.  You can see the article at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-078.mspx.  Does this affect Vista? Are there any Microsoft operating systems not affected by this security “hole”?  What about other versions of Internet Explorer?  Based on your reading at Computertraining.com, what are some of the ways to distribute the “fix” to multiple computers?

Printer Driver Issues

June 23rd, 2009 by ComputerTraining.com Forum user Instructor

In a recent Computertraining.com class, you learned about drivers, expecially printer drivers.  One of your new clients says that she just upgraded to Vista Home, and now her Lexmark Photo P3150 multifunction printer does not work.  You suspect it is a driver issue. You can visit the Lexmark website here; http://support.lexmark.com/perl/support/support.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:402:0:0&docid=ENUS22657.  Can we get a new driver to solve the problem?  Or is there a solution on the Microsoft website?  Maybe you can think of a solution involving Virtual PC?  What will you tell your client?

How would one go about setting up a VPN solution for your small business? What equipment would you need to obtain? Who would be your provider? What would the costs be? Would you as a business have to have IT “expertise” on staff or could someone else provide you with an experienced technician?

The NTFS ‘Read and Execute” permission

May 7th, 2009 by ComputerTraining.com Forum user PaulSRTM

You have learned about the NTFS file permission of “Read and Execute” in your class at Computertraining.com.  This permission is ‘grayed out” unless the file in question is, in fact, an executable file.  One of the most common types of executable file can be identified by its file extension of “.exe”, such as NOTEPAD.EXE.  What are some of the other common extensions found on executable files?  If you doubleclick on a file called MYTEXT.TXT, it will most likely open in the Microsoft Windows Notepad application.  Does that make it an executable file? Can you think of a situation in which you would  give someone the Read permission to a folder, but NOT “Read AND Execute”?  Could the user “fool” NTFS security by renaming the file to a name that does not have an executable extension?

IP addressing

March 10th, 2009 by ComputerTraining.com Forum user PaulSRTM

In a recent class at Computetraining.com, you learned about “Static” versus “Dynamic” IP addresses.  Considering the capabilities and convenience of DHCP, are there any good reasons that a device should have a static address?  Static or dynamic, are there any rules that must be followed every time when choosing an address for a device on a particular subnet?  You learned that Vista is capable of using IPV6 addresses.  If your company still has plenty of public addresses assigned to it, is there any reason to switch?  The link  below may shed some light on the topic.
